Throughout a year, the Hibernian Law Journal runs a number of events including an Annual Lecture and Annual Launch of the Journal.

Attendance at both events, the Annual Lecture and Annual Launch may be counted towards the Law Society CPD points and we will provide you with more information at the time of public announcement of these events.

We have included in the Photos Section some of the photos from previous Annual Lecture and Annual Launch events of the Journal and will be updating our Gallery with more photos as we go along and hold the next event of the Journal.

Past Event - Lecture by Judge O’Higgins

The Annual Lecture entitled "The Three Courts" was given by Mr Justice Kevin O’Higgins on 4 February 2010 at 7pm in the Atrium, Educational Centre, the Law Society, Blackhall Place, Dublin 7.

Judge O’Higgins, one of the longest serving judge in the country spoke about his personal experience working as a judge in both Irish and EU courts.

Kevin O’Higgins was born in 1946 and was educated in the Crescent College, Clongowes Wood College and University College Dublin (BA.(1967) and Diploma in European law (1969)). He was called to the bar in 1968 and specialised in Criminal Law. He was called to the Inner Bar in 1982. He was appointed to The Circuit Court in1986 and served in the Dublin Circuit, the Midland Circuit and then on the South Western Circuit until his appointment to the High Court in 1997. He was the Irish representative on the Consultative Council of European Judges (2000-2008). He was appointed to Court of First Instance (now The European General Court) in 2008.

The Annual Lecture was chaired by the Hon. Mrs. Justice Fidelma Macken, Supreme Court Judge.

The Introductory Part of the Lecture was given by Professor Imelda Maher, UCD.

Annual Lecture

The Annual Lecture is a public lecture which is held annually by the Editorial Committee and provides a forum for eminent jurists from around the world to speak on topics of interest to the Irish legal community. Previous guest speakers at the Annual Lecture included a list of such distinguished speakers as AG Francis Jacobs (2003), Andreas F Lowenfeld (2004), Geoffrey Robertson QC (2005), Erik Mose, President of the International Criminal Tribunal in Rwanda (2006) and AG Eleanor Sharpston of the European Court of Justice (2007). The Annual Lecture is generally chaired by a distinguished Irish legal personality, and for the past several years the Annual Lecture has been chaired by a judge of the Supreme Court.

Annual Launch

The Editorial Committee also organises an Annual Launch of the Journal which purpose is to launch the publication of the most recent edition of the Journal. Mr. Justice Michael Peart, the Judge of the High Court and Mr. Justice Nial Fennelly, the Judge of the Supreme Court were previously invited on separate occasions to write the foreword and launch the Journal’s editions of 2006-2009. The next Volume 9 of the Journal will be launched in Spring 2010 and we will post more information about the Annual Launch closer to the launch event.
